Commercially produced toilet paper didn’t begin circulating until 1857. And still today lots of people in India don’t use it, they use their left hand
For example Ancient Romans used a sponge on the end of a long stick that was shared by everyone in the community. When not in use, that stick stayed in a bucket of heavily salted seawater in the communal bathroom. Sailors used a rope, Greeks used some stone or ceramics, corn cobs was used by americans back in the days. In France they simply used dirt, grass or leaves.

well paper was invented a long long ago in 100BC, so before that i guess people were not so developed and used leaves or some kind of cloth raw material got from some trees, but as it was dangeroues for their axx, sometime it use to damage and get rashes which wasnt good for their skin, so then i guess they had to invent the toilet paper or paper.
