What are your views on Hitchhiking? Is it safe? What are your experiences?

I know there is a stretch of road in America called the death mile, it is notorious for murders looking to lure hitchikers, John Wane Gacy, the serial killer, used this strecth of road many times.
However, i live in Perth and we have the largest park in the Southern Hemisphere, called kingspark! It is an amazing park, yet the sheer size of this park has made it a perfect location for past murders and for people looking to get rid of bodies…
I was getting smashed one night at a club, i drunkly stumbled out of the club and wandered off. I ended up in Kingspark at 2 in the morning, stumbling drunk through the pitch black roads.
I spotted a car approaching and my drunk self thought “i can get a ride, because i’m not going to find my way out of this place”, i stuck up my thumb and the car stopped. I gazed in and i saw 4 friendly looking Japanese tourists! They were grinning at me and gave me a lift back to civilization!
I was lucky this night and my friends couldn’t believe i’d hitchiked! I think you take your safety in your own hands when you hitchhike though, you might not get as lucky as i did....
