Can we pet wild animals too like wombat, wolves, lions, snakes and others?

Have seen on TV and in youtube videos many times people have pet wild animals, foxes or lions are living in their homes, they have wombats, pythons larger then 15feet, crocodile, grizzly etc. Do we need special permissions from government for that? I wanna pet a tiger.
