Q. What’s the best kind of bathroom lighting?

Like other parts of your house, the bathroom also deserves to have the right lighting. For starters, you need to look at the three main sections: the bathtub, the shower area, and the vanity. These are three different parts that serve their own unique functions and this means you need to find the right lighting for every individual area. But then again, they are all part of one bathroom and that also means the lighting in the tub area, the shower area, and the vanity should have that cohesive look—the lighting should transition seamlessly from one part of the bathroom to another.
To do this, it helps to look at what lighting designers often call the “three layers of lighting” which are the following: general or ambient lighting, task lighting, and accent lighting. For the tub area, you’ll likely want something more relaxing—a dimmable ambient light that you can adjust according to your preference. You can go with simple yet elegant bathroom downlights for this. For the shower area you’ll want greater flexibility here and you can go with a heater light and exhaust combination. As for your vanity, you might want to consider finding the appropriate task lighting since this area is where activities like toothbrushing, putting on makeup, shaving, and other grooming tasks are done. You can incorporate mirror lights, vanity lights, and even indoor wall lights. If you’re looking for something more minimalist, you can do it with a wall light like the Otis 60 LED Wall Light from Nordlux. It’s suited for bathrooms since it has an IIP44 weatherproof rating and that means it functions well even in wetter areas. It comes with a 2-step mood maker that can give you both a natural light at 100% brightness or comfortable night light that’s perfect for use, especially during nighttime. It also comes with a cabinet bracket, making it easier for you to mount this on a cabinet. For a bathroom, I tend to like dimmer switches. When getting ready in the morning, I opt for bright lights to wake me up fully. For my bedtime bath, however, it’s good to turn the lights down to settle into a relaxing mood. It’s all about versatility. Go for LED lights to get bright white lights that are close to the sun. Ideally, you’d have plenty of natural sunlight but I understand that this isn’t always possible.
A good option is to go for an LED mirror. I found one online at Clearlight Designs and it really does a great job. With all the other lights off, it creates romantic and relaxing mood lighting. When they’re all on, though, it gives me the best view in the mirror. This mirror light is highly energy efficient and just looks really cool and luxurious.
