The right kind of specialist to diagnose Auditory Processing Disorder is an audiologist (APD). Despite the fact that developmental psychologists and speech language pathologists can identify some auditory deficiencies, they are unable to diagnose auditory processing disorders. When a battery of tests is done in extremely specified settings, a diagnosis is made. Testing takes place in a soundproof booth with recorded information transmitted through headphones into the right, left, or both ears (depending on the test). Several tests are conducted through a speaker, but all are conducted only on the basis of aural information (no visual cues), and the signal presented is calibrated as well as presented at a set volume. This is very necessary in order to apply age appropriate norms and see where your child’s scores are in each category of APD.
