That’s a common problem beginner entrepreneurs run into, and there are dozens of different ways to approach that issue. I think the best place to start is with a simple question: why did you create that product? Most people decide to launch products to solve an issue or fix a gap in the market or do a better version of a solution that already exists.

Assuming your product solves something, then your main audience is whoever needs that solution the most. Add to that the modifiers that the audience in question should be able to afford your solution, and they should be reachable through whatever sales and marketing tools you intend on using.

Say you’ve created an amazing violin cleaning product that works twice as good as anything on the market. Who’s the best target audience for that? Well, everyone who owns a violin needs to clean it every so often. But people who own a lot of violins will make much more use of a better cleaning product, especially if it lets them clean their violins faster. In that case, it would be a good idea to target music stores, orchestras, music schools, and other institutions that may have a lot of violins lying around.

Another solution is to copy someone else’s homework. Who are your competitors, how long have they been in the market, and what demographics are they currently targeting? You don’t need to target the exact same audience, but competitor research can work as a good jumping-off point to help you figure out who your ideal customers are.

You can even check what your competitors overseas are doing: the UK market isn’t exactly the same as the US, but certain needs and demographics stay the same across national borders. It is one of the reasons why Kadence UK and other similar market research agencies operate internationally, as this website shows.

Getting started with marketing can be a challenge. How long does it take to start seeing the result from it? How much does it cost? Not everyone has the budget but if you have the time, you can get started. Marketing is constantly changing, but the essentials stay the same; to deliver more qualified leads. But the challenge is that todays consumers dont like to be sold to that interrupt them. Rather than pushing your marketing messages to your target consumers, you need agile strategies for lead generation and marketing that work to find prospects and close deals. Know who your targets are.
