As a result of their almost similar appearances people often get confused while differentiating among a Cheetah and Leopard.
Size and body shape: The cheetah has taller shoulders that the leopard and thus it stands higher from the ground but the leopard can weigh 10-15 kilograms more than the cheetah.
Cheetah is the fastest land mammal whose power is its speed, they catch their prey by tripping them and therefore they do not need to be too strong, on the contrary, a leopard uses a stalk-and-pound technique which needs strength so their bodies are more stocky and strong.
Shape of tail – A cheetahs tail is flatter to help it balance while it is at its top speed whereas, the leopard’s tail is tubular in shape.
Coat – Cheetah have spots that are clear and black whereas, leopards have rosettes that are formed by a small irregular group of spots.
facial marking – Cheetah has a tear mark on their face which is completely missing in the leopard.
Other – There are other certain differences in the claws, feet and body structures that can be seen on minute observation.
